A client of mine is in the process of purchasing a new construction condo in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood. During the property inspection, the inspector noticed that the light switch on the wall in the guest bathroom appeared to be too close to the tub. Having never run into this before, I was curious as to whether this was truly a code violation. I made a quick call to the City of Chicago Building Department and actually got a live person on the phone on the first try. Sure enough, according to the staff member, the switch “must be at least 3 feet away from the tub.” So of course, we wrote this up on our punch list as an item to be corrected by the developer. And the developer’s response:
The light switch will not be moved. The plans indicte the placement of the light switch and the construction has already received final electrical approval from the City.
Guess the city sets the rules but they are not great at enforcing them.
