Once again, the Sellsius gents beat me to a great post. Check out the Burnham Pointe ad from Terrapin Properties in their post. I saw this ad in The Chicago Trib I believe, “Surprisingly doable” is the catch phrase in the ad … to sell condos … I think? The accompanying picture drives the ad home. My jaw dropped. What has real estate advertising come to?

Being outrageous can get attention and sex sells. This might not be the best way to present themselves, but in a market as competitive as this it might be enough to break through and get some attention. It reminds me of the billboard from the divorce attorney a few months back. It caused a controversey and though he pulled it down quickly, he got more than his money’s worth with publicity.

Coming from 5+ years in advertising, working on a lot of “blue chip” clients, such as McD’s, Wrigley, etc, I’ve seen my share of racey ads. But COME ON! We’re selling homes, not the women (or men) that come with them. It’s one thing to discuss lifestyle and see a couple or family or a single individual enjoying a glass of wine…but they are usually a small blip in the overall high resolution picture of the condos features. I think it detracts from the name of the advertiser and completely negates any respect that they’ve earned. If you can’t sell your condos the usual way (as everyone else has been doing for decades), it’s time for a new career!
